How do horses breathe in normal conditions?

Horses normally breathe through their nose, which regulates airflow and filters out dust and foreign objects. A healthy horse will exhibit regular and calm breathing, with the respiratory rate usually ranging between 8 and 16 breaths per minute, depending on factors such as age, activity and ambient temperature. The nostrils should be symmetrical, and breathing sounds should be soft and even. Any signs of straining, shortness of breath or unusual noises could indicate breathing problems and should be carefully observed.
