Yes, watery eyes can be a symptom of various health problems in horses. Increased tearing can indicate irritation, infection, allergies or other eye problems. If tearing is persistent or noticeable, a veterinary examination is advisable to determine the exact cause and allow for appropriate treatment.
There are several eye diseases that can affect horses, including conjunctivitis, uveitis (periodic eye inflammation), corneal ulcers, glaucoma, cataracts and conjunctivitis. Symptoms can include redness, increased tearing, sensitivity to light and changes in the horse's behavior.
Signs that a horse may have eye problems include increased blinking, frequent rubbing of the eyes, increased tearing or noticeable redness of the conjunctiva. Furthermore, sensitivity to light and increased closing of the eyes can indicate possible problems. Changes in behavior, such as rubbing the head or turning away from light, are also signs that could indicate eye problems.
Careful eye rinsing with sterile saline solution can remove foreign bodies and clean the eyes. Additional measures such as protection against allergens and the use of a fly mask can help to minimize irritation.
