A healthy circulation in horses can be supported by a balanced diet that includes vitamins such as E, C and K. Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant, contributes to the cell protective function. Vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant, can strengthen blood vessels, while vitamin K is involved in blood clotting. A diet that includes these vitamins, along with adequate exercise, can help promote the horse's overall circulatory health.
Horses normally breathe through their nose, which regulates airflow and filters out dust and foreign objects. A healthy horse will exhibit regular and calm breathing, with the respiratory rate usually ranging between 8 and 16 breaths per minute, depending on factors such as age, activity and ambient temperature. The nostrils should be symmetrical, and breathing sounds should be soft and even. Any signs of straining, shortness of breath or unusual noises could indicate breathing problems and should be carefully observed.
A horse with circulatory problems may manifest itself through increased respiratory rate, increased pulse, excessive sweating, unsteadiness when standing or walking and pale mucous membranes. In advanced cases, signs of exhaustion, staggering or collapse could occur. A careful observer should recognize these behavioral changes and take immediate measures such as cooling and hydration to support the horse's well-being.
If a horse shows signs of circulatory problems, it is important to immediately move it to a cool, shady place and provide good ventilation to prevent overheating. Give the horse access to fresh water and encourage it to drink in small amounts to replace fluid loss. Acting quickly and implementing these measures can help stabilize the horse's health and prevent further complications.
Watch for signs of exhaustion and loss of performance in horses. Listen carefully for unusual breathing sounds and coughing. Monitor the pulse and heart rate for possible irregularities to detect heart problems early.
