Everyone knows them, everyone knows what they are after... the blood of our horses and they also like our blood. Because of their blood snack, they not only cause pain and itching, but are also absolute troublemakers who, in rare cases, can act as disease carriers. But who exactly are these pests?
The horsefly (Tabanus sudeticus)
It is the largest of the European fly species. Equipped with short antennae and dark brown to copper-colored compound eyes, they make life difficult for our horses in summer. The horses are only visited by the female bloodsuckers; the male horse flies have no interest; their prey includes nectar and plant juices. The female horseflies usually spend their time from the end of May to August on the meadows of horses and cattle with a preference for being near water. Your victims are therefore in the immediate vicinity. She finds dark animals attractive, which are ideally in motion and emit high concentrations of sweat odors and CO2.
If you stab, the wound will bleed in most cases because an anticoagulant substance is injected into the puncture site. Due to bleeding into the tissue, the area becomes thick after a short time – a bruise has formed. As if that wasn't enough, the bite causes severe itching that can last up to three days.
In very rare cases, the horsefly can transmit Borrelia and cause Lyme disease. It has also been identified as a carrier of the EIA virus. The equine infectious anemia/contagious anemia of equine equines is referred to as “EIA”. Contagious anemia has now reached Germany. Even the suspicion that the horse may have been infected with the virus must be reported, as it is a notifiable disease and government control measures must be initiated. Affected horses must be euthanized.

Fight flies systematically
Flies in summer can be particularly annoying as they occur more frequently in the warm season and our horses in particular buzz around. They are attracted to sweet and fermented smells and also sweat.
Stables can provide a habitat for numerous pests and vermin. Flies in particular find a diverse and rich supply of food here as well as a microclimate that promotes development. Stable flies are not just disruptive and annoying insects that make horses nervous. The alternating stay on the feces, the food and the animals can make the fly a carrier of harmful germs and thus a health hazard.
