The tick – a danger for humans and animals!

How can you protect yourself and your pet?

There are various ways to protect people and animals from tick bites and the associated possible infection risks:

1. If possible, avoid dense forests and tall grass, as ticks are common in these environments.

2. Protective clothing: wearing long-sleeved clothing and long pants can help protect the skin from ticks.

3. Protection from the outside by using tick repellents: the cdVet ZeckEx Spray is a highly effective tick repellent spray with immediate effect.

4. The essential fatty acids contained in it in combination with lauric acid and essential oils from black cumin can optimize the skin's metabolism and influence the animal's body odor.

Our ZeckEx SpotOn is a care oil for masking odors against ticks, fleas, mites, lice and flying insects.

The tick is a parasite that is widespread throughout the world and is not exactly popular with our pets. The tick feeds on the blood of numerous vertebrates. Blood loss is not a problem for the host. The tick is better known as a carrier of pathogens and is therefore feared. Biologically, ticks belong to the class of arachnids, which is also easily recognizable by their eight legs. The tick's body structure means it has adapted perfectly to its environment, but as a parasite it needs other creatures whose blood it lives on. A tick can cling to its host for up to 15 days, and to do this it looks for a suitable place where it can hold on firmly. Ticks need a certain amount of blood for each growth spurt, just as females do for reproduction.

How long do ticks live?

A tick can survive for a very long time with a single blood meal. In the wild, ticks live on average between 3 and 5 years. Male ticks die after mating and female ticks usually die after laying eggs. Under test conditions in the laboratory, ticks that had previously sucked blood could survive for up to ten years without further food. The parasites can therefore live for a very long time without a host.

Why are ticks dangerous?

First of all, it is important to know that it is not tick venom that makes the host ill, but the danger comes from the pathogens. The pathogens are located in the tick's salivary glands or intestines. These are then released into the host's body via the stinging apparatus. Proper precautions are therefore very important.

What types of ticks are there?

There are now over 900 species of ticks worldwide, found in a variety of habitats, including forests, meadows, swamps and even cities. Some species are endemic to certain areas, while others are found in several regions of the world. The most well-known tick species include the following:

Common tick

(Ixodes ricinus)

This species lives in moist forests, meadows and grasslands where they wait for host animals such as deer, mice, birds and other small mammals. When a host animal passes by, they settle on it and look for a suitable place to suck blood. This tick is widespread in Europe and Asia and can transmit various diseases such as Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and anaplasmosis.

American dog tick

(Dermacentor variabilis)

This species is widespread in North America and can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia and babesiosis.

Brown dog tick

(Rhipicephalus sanguineus)

The tick is about 3 to 5 mm in size and has a reddish-brown color. It prefers warm, dry environments and is therefore particularly common in areas with hot temperatures, such as the Mediterranean. However, it is also widespread in other parts of the world and can transmit various diseases such as ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Lone Star tick

(Amblyomma americanum)

This species is common in the southeastern and eastern United States and can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and tularemia. Lone Star ticks are relatively small, measuring about 3-5 mm, and can be identified by the white or pale patch on the back of adult females. Males have a more uniform brown coloration.

Hyalomma tick

(Hyalomma marginatum)

This relatively large tick grows up to 1.5 cm long and is typically found in the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. The Hyalomma tick is known to feed on a wide range of hosts, including mammals, birds and reptiles. It can transmit Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Tier, Insekt, Wirbellose, Zecke

The floodplain forest tick

(Dermacentor reticulatus)

The floodplain forest tick is a type of tick that is found primarily in the floodplain forests of Europe. It prefers moist environments and is therefore particularly common in rivers and wetlands. With a size of 3.5 - 6mm, it is larger than other native ticks. The floodplain forest tick is a vector for various pathogens, including babesiosis, also known as canine malaria.

What is the tick's habitat?

Ticks mainly inhabit forests and grasslands, but they can also be found in wetlands and bushes. They often prefer areas with tall grass or dense undergrowth, as they can protect themselves from the sun and more easily wait for their hosts. Some species also live in cities, especially in parks or gardens with lots of trees and bushes. Ticks are often found in areas with high wildlife populations, as they feed on blood and often use wildlife as hosts.
