What if my dog is shivering?
Isn't it heartbreaking when our dogs sit in front of us and shiver with all their might? All you want to do is pick them up and give them a big hug so they can warm up quickly.
You would think that the thick fur would keep our beloved pets warm and cozy. But that's not the case with some dogs. There are a number of differences that are typical for each breed. A prime example of this is the Whippet. This breed of dog practically has the word "freezing" in its name, which means "little wind chime". These very thin dogs have barely a gram of fat on their bodies and also very short fur. The phenomenon of shivering also often affects small dogs, such as the Miniature Pinscher. Large dog breeds such as the St. Bernard, on the other hand, have a longer coat and a more massive body structure, which means that they are naturally less sensitive to the cold and therefore shiver less often.
As with humans, the contraction of the muscles, i.e. "shivering", ensures that energy is generated and the body temperature rises.
What else could be responsible for the shivering?
Another reason for the uncontrolled twitching of the muscles can also be the animal's emotions. Some animals also react to stress, joy or fear with light to strong tremors. In particular, events such as a thunderstorm or the annual New Year's Eve fireworks or even a visit to the vet can quickly make the animal feel uneasy and cause our furry friend to shake violently.
What can I do if my dog is shaking?
If the shaking is caused by emotions, i.e. more of a reaction to stress, there are also nutritional support options, such as organic Bach flowers from cdVet, which gently strengthen the dog's nerves. Products based on St. John's wort and lemon balm have also proven to be effective. St. John's wort contains hyperforin and lemon balm contains sesquiterpenes. Both in combination can help to optimize the animal's diet, especially in acute stress situations.
For dogs that suffer from constant stress and are therefore constantly shaking, the focus should generally be on food. Often, poor nutrition is directly responsible for weak nerves. In humans, too, poor nutrition, e.g. with too much sugar, flavor enhancers, fat and additives, can make us feel worse overall and therefore react more emotionally. In particular, you can see how many children react immediately to being given sweets and then quickly walk across tables and benches.
It is therefore obvious that dogs that seem stressed can particularly benefit from a natural diet, such as a diet of raw meat or at least cold-pressed dry food. In addition, supplementary feed specially formulated with vitamins, minerals and secondary plant substances, such as nerve food from the cdVet Classic range, is suitable for anxious, restless or easily irritable animals.
