Since the "industrialization" of feed, nutrients that only nature can provide us have been lacking. For example, vitamin K2, which is essential for blood clotting, is only found in the meat of grazing animals. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting, cell growth and bone metabolism.
Vitamin K is one of the fat-soluble vitamins and is found in green plants (essential for plant photosynthesis). If the animal being fed does not get fresh greens from the meadow, there will be no vitamin K2 in the meat!
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) is absorbed through food and is found in green fodder such as fresh hay and fresh green flour. However, it is not found, or only in very small amounts, in silage, grain, tubers and root vegetables or oilseeds.
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is produced by intestinal bacteria (in animals from pasture-raised animals!). K2 can be better absorbed by the body than vitamin K1. However, K1 can be converted into K2 via a healthy intestinal flora!
Vitamin K3 (menadione*) is a synthetically produced vitamin K. Menadione can have toxic effects and has therefore not been used as a food supplement in humans since 1989. In contrast to animal nutrition, the synthetic product has continued to be used here for over 30 years. Menadione is deposited in meat, eggs and milk.
The good news: Natural alternatives can also be used in animal nutrition. e.g. MicroMineral – products from cdVet contain vitamin K from natural sources. If given daily, a deficiency in micronutrients and vitamins can be compensated.
